1,456 [Employees] Of Gov't Get Axe For Security Since May

WASHINGTON, (AP)--The White House says 1,456 government [employees] have been fired or forced to resign under President Eisenhower's new security program since it went into operation May 27.

These removals from the government payroll are apart from the separation of 145,000 other federal [employees] for economy reasons, Presidential Press Secretary James C. Hagerty told newsmen Friday.

The number of security removals under the Eisenhower program compares with these figures for the old loyalty program which operated for five years under President Truman.

Five hundred sixty persons were found ineligible for employment on loyalty grounds and either not hired or fired. While FBI investigations of applicants or [employees] were under way, 2,748 persons either quit or withdrew their job applications. In all, the FBI made 26,236 investigations. Another 3,634 persons quit their jobs after their cases went to a loyalty review board.

Officials say the security grounds for firing, or non-employment, under the Eisenhower program are broader than the loyalty standards under the Truman program. The present directive provides for getting rid of persons classed as drunks, homosexuals, loose talkers and others considered bad security risks as well as outright subversives.
