Weed Out 119 U.S. Employees

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The State Department detected and released 119 homosexuals during the calendar year 1951, the house appropriations committee reported.

The figures were given to the committee by C. H. Humelaine, Deputy Undersecretary of State, during hearings on the department's 1953 budget bill. The committee made them public.

The 119, Humelaine said, were in the department and its foreign service.

"We have been working in a very vigorous way on this particular problem," Humelaine said. "We have resolved that we are going to clean it up."

Rep. Rooney (D-NY), who conducted the hearings, commended the department and said the problem was not confined to that agency alone. Rooney said the Commerce Department found 53 homosexuals "and they are still weeding them out."
