This week Brewmasters Taproom in Renton, Washington has become the target of anti-LGBTQ extremists. On Wednesday, December 7th, a car was reported to drive by the brewery and discharge a projectile which damaged some of the storefront glass, leaving behind a shattered imprint shown by a photo on their Instagram page. It has become one of a number of drag queen events targeted across the country as far-right media personalities and politicians have relied on anti-LGBTQ rhetoric.
An online group called “Wake Up WA State” began a series of post asking followers to “look out for an announcement” which a future post would eventually include this Renton event where it was suggested participants were being “groomed”. The messaging is similar to that of other online activist groups like “Libs of TikTok” which seem to misrepresent LGBTQ-related activities in order to stir anger among people. Contrary to this framing, the drag queen story events are family-friendly and the materials are youth-oriented.
