United States Congress Passes Respect for Marriage Act

On the morning of Thursday, December 8th, 2022, the U.S. House of Representatives voted 258-169 to re-approve the Respect for Marriage Act after the U.S. Senate passed an amended version of the original bill. The entire Democratic Party voted in favor of the bill. A majority of the Republican Party remains opposed, but a minority has been in favor which has allowed the legislation to pass in what has often been perceived as a gridlocked Congress.

The bill will go to the White House where it is expected President Biden will sign it into law. With federal legislation backing same-sex marriages, an attempt by the Supreme Court to overturn them will now be more costly.
