When they first hear of the Mattachine Society, lots of people ask that question. Some of them think we have a large organization with unlimited funds and an avowed purpose of defending everyone caught in the web of the law. Such is not the case. The organization is very small, and it has no money to fight legal battles.

But a public service more far-reaching heads the program of the Mattachine. Education of the public about the true aspects of human behavior, creating an understanding for those persons whose behavior may vary from accepted standards and yet cause no real social harm, and to advocate a code of proper conduct for everyone to follow--these are the principle aim of Mattachine.
