Matthew Wayne Shepard (December 1, 1976 – October 12, 1998) was a gay American whose brutal death resulted in a movement to push against hate crimes and gay panic defense. A hate crimes law passed in 2009 bears his name and another victim to hate crimes which is known as the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.
