2 Indicted on Charge of Extortion Through Post as Policemen
Two young men were indicted by a District grand jury yesterday on charges of extorting money from a 28-year-old sailor by threatening to expose him as a homosexual.
Named in an indictment charging blackmail and conspiracy to blackmail were William G. Hines, jr., 20, of the 300 block of Thirty-seventh street S.E., and John W. Robertson, jr., 21, of the 3300 block of Brothers place S.E.
According to police, a yeoman stationed at Henderson Hall complained that Hines and Robertson had systematically extorted money from him from the latter part of March until the pair was arrested on May 18.
Paid Total of $205
The sailor told police Hines and Robertson pretended to be police officers and "arrested" him in Lafayette Park. Thereafter, he said, he paid out a total of $205 to keep the two from reporting to Naval authorities that they suspected him of sexual irregularities.
The sailor said Hines and Robertson used his car for approximately three weeks before he made a complaint to police.
