Joseph McCarthy, born November 14, 1908, passed away on May 2, 1957. From 1947 until the end of his life he served in the U.S. Senate representing the State of Wisconsin. Alongside other leading figures he was one of the most renowned during a period known as McCarthyism which the Republican Party heavily pursued removing Communists, communist sympathizers, and other groups they classified as "security risks" or "immorals" from positions with the federal government, which included LGBTQIA+ communities.
