STATE DEPARTMENT DISMISSALS
The latest count in the State Department of dismissals since Dwight D. Eisenhower's administration came into power is an impressive one. While figures for all [employees], who were released on economy grounds and not given in the latest report, the complete figure for those released because they constituted a security threat are listed.
Those figures show that 306 State Department [employees] and 178 [employees] in stations abroad have been removed from their jobs since the Republicans took over. Altogether, security-caused releases have resulted in dismissal of approximately 1500 government [employees], in all departments, in this same period.
In economy moves, the Administration has cut close to 100,000 persons off the public payroll, in all departments, and the process is still continuing, though at a slower pace. It is interesting to note that the security dismissals are aimed at those who commit acts "contrary to the best interest of national security." This includes homosexuals, alcoholics, and others, as well was actual Communists or Communist sympathizers.
