UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT

Memorandum

DATE: 8/22/61

TO: DIRECTOR, FBI (100-211619)

FROM: SAC, LOS ANGELES (100-18762)

SUBJECT: HARRY HAY, aka.

SM - C

OO: LOS ANGELES

Re Los Angeles letter to the Bureau dated 6/15/61 and reports of SA [redacted] at Los Angeles dated 6/15/61 and 8/22/61.

Pursuant to Bureau authority, subject was interviewed at 1388 Westwood Boulevard, Los Angeles on 8/4/61 by SAs [redacted] and [redacted]. Mr. HAY was apprised of the jurisdiction of the FBI in security matters. He immediately stated that he had nothing to say and did not wish to talk to the FBI and terminated the interview.

[redacted]

It is noted that HAY joined the Communist Party (CP) in Los Angeles in 1934 and dropped out and rejoined it in 1938. He is not reported to have attended any CP meetings since the early part of 1950. He declined to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities on 7/2/55, invoking the First and Fifth Amendments.

In view of the lack of activity of subject since 1950 in the CP and lack of CP front activity during the past five years, it is recommended that consideration be given to removing subject from the Security Index.
