Here are a few moments in gay history that occurred on this week in the past (last week in gay history):
- February 13th
- 51 years ago, in 1972, the National Coalition of Gay Organizations adopted its Gay Rights Platform for the same year. It included many demands which are still being fought for by LGBTQ people today such as federal and state level non-discrimination laws. Some demands might be considered more radical, such as removing limits to the numbers of person included within a marriage unit. Gay Rights Platform, NCGO (Record, February 1972).
- February 18th
- 68 years ago, in 1955, newspaper report “10,000 Fairies Invade Harlem”. The same paper also claimed the Harlem community was mostly indifferent to the new arrivers. Harlem has a long rich history with the LGBTQ community, especially queer BIPOC communities who were major contributors to drag and ball cultures, paving the way for other notable cultural trends such as vogue.
